What matters
Why the cancellation notice belongs in every message
An empty slot hurts most when you find out too late. If the cancellation notice is already in the confirmation and again in the reminder, the client knows by when to let you know, and you have time to give the slot to someone else. State the notice in hours, along with a number where someone actually picks up.
When a reminder does the most good
Two moments have proved their worth: one to three days before, so there is still time to rearrange, and on the day itself as a short heads-up. A reminder that arrives after the cancellation deadline has passed does little for you, because by then the slot is hard to fill.
SMS or email
An SMS gets noticed on a phone straight away, but it is short and costs money. An email has room for the address and any notes, and costs nothing. Many salons confirm by email and remind by SMS. The SMS template stays under 160 characters as long as the salon name and phone number are short.

Messages that send themselves

How long can an SMS be?
One SMS holds 160 characters of the standard GSM alphabet, which covers plain letters, digits, common punctuation and the £ sign. A single emoji, curly quotation marks or apostrophes, or a letter such as á or ó lowers the limit to 70. Longer texts are split into several messages and cost more accordingly. If need be, shorten the salon name.
Should the cancellation notice be in the confirmation?
Yes. Clients who read the notice when they book can stick to it. It is repeated in the reminder because that is when it is needed.
